Festival of Ideas Lecture Meeting Point & Time

We will be meeting at 5.30pm (promptly) outside the Mill Lane Lecture Rooms on Thursday 25th October to see 'Being a Language Detective'.

Please check the location HERE.

Please BE ON TIME as we will be going into the lecture at 5.30pm to ensure seating as we are a large group of people.

Thank you,
Sarah

Next Academic Vocabulary Test

Will be held on Monday 29th October and will test you on your knowledge of Units 10 - 16 from Academic Vocabulary in Use

Two-Minute Topic Presentations

On Thursday (25th October) of Week 5, each of you will give a super mini-presentation on the theme of urbanisation, that is, cities.

Your presentation will comprise of what you found out while investigating ONE of the following:

- a radio programme from www.bbc.co.uk/radio4
- a newspaper article from a broadsheet newspaper, such as The Guardian www.guardian.co.uk, The Independent www.independent.co.uk or The Telegraph www.telegraph.co.uk.  Please bear in mind that the first two newspapers tend to be more left-wing while the latter generally reflects conservative views.
- a lecture from www.ted.com

Make notes while you read/listen and you may need to read/listen 3 or 4 times until you really get the main points that you will use to describe in your presentation.

Your aim is to inform your audience so make sure you get your points across clearly in order that everyone can understand what you are saying and, ultimately, see why it's interesting!

You have 2 minutes exactly; no more, no less, so it would be a great idea to practice the timing of your talk before you present.

You are allowed a few notes but ideally you will be speaking freely.  It shouldn't be a learned speech but a chance to speak 'on your feet' about what you have learned.

The Festival of Ideas

Being in Cambridge, we are lucky to be able to experience the University of Cambridge's 'Festival of Ideas' that is held over a fortnight every autumn at various locations around the city.

While you are free to attend whichever lecture you would like, two which seem to be relevant and may be more interesting for the international student have been selected that we will go to as a class.

They are:

Being a Language Detective       Thursday 25th October, 6 - 7pm

"A look at how linguists and regular people use analytical techniques to unlock the secrets of language; focusing on identifying a speaker's gender, race, region and age."
A talk by Bert Vaux, Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics.

Info on p.9 of the brochure.

When in Rome...have nightmares like the Romans      Friday 2nd November, 6 - 8pm

"What gives us nightmares?  Do we all fear the same things?  Are horror stories told in the same way all over the world?  Come and discover how the same object can make us laugh or shiver."
Facilitated by Erica Berzaghi, Anglia Ruskin University.

Info on  p.32 of the brochure.

The lectures are free but because we are a large group, we need to go in together slightly earlier than the published time.  A meeting point will be established closer to the time.

All updates will be published on this blog!
